Almuñecar

Almuñecar forms part of the Costa Tropical and is situated in the province of Granada., but only an hour’s drive from Malaga airport. This town lies between Costa del Sol to the west and the coast of Almería to the east.

Behind the town of Almuñecar you will see the mountains, some of which boast the highest peaks in mainland Spain. Towering above them all are the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These mountains shelter the Granada coast from the harsher weather, therefore leaving us with a subtropical climate.

Almuñecar, with its Moorish castle, sits on a small hill between the mouths of two rivers, the Rio Seco and the Rio Verde. The latter runs through Almuñecar’s valley, a fertile area of mainly subtropical fruit orchards. To the west of the town lies the Punta Mona, a pine clad headland sheltering the harbour, Marina del Este.

Almuñecar was founded by the Phoenicians almost 3000 years ago. It has since been occupied by a succession of Mediterranean cultures including the Romans and the Moors. Attracted by the rich trade in local products, the town was one of the most important ports on Spain's Mediterranean coast. Evidence of the area's importance can be seen in the numerous monuments that still exist, especially the Roman fish factory and aqueduct.

Along the 19 km of local coastline visitors can choose from a large variety of beaches and small coves, ranging from fine sand to shingle.

Local tourism has traditionally been Spanish and confined to the summer season, especially August when the town is a favourite of Spanish families from the north of Spain. Due to its exceptional weather the town is becoming more popular as an all year round resort, but still remains, very much, a Spanish town. With its friendly atmosphere and easy access it is a lovely town to visit and enjoy a relaxing holiday.

Over the past three years Almuñecar Town Hall and the Regional Government have invested heavily in making the town and its facilities accessible to all. As a result, Almuñecar is one of Spain’s best resorts for ramped access, with an excellent wheelchair friendly beachfront and long promenade which offers disabled friendly bars, restaurants and shops.
